How we rank Search results

Search is designed to assist you in finding relevant accounts and subjects. It differs from Feed, Stories, Reels, and Explore in that your feedback aids us in deciding what to display you. Your search informs us what you’re looking for, and when the results aren’t relevant, it’s obvious. We want to make sure we do this right, so we strive to organize search results by what’s most important to you – whether that’s a close friend, a favorite creative, or vegan dessert recipes.

Let’s pretend you’re looking for photos of space after viewing the blue moon. The first thing you see when you press the search box on the Explore page is your recent searches. We display your accounts, audio, hashtags, and places that match the content of your search as soon as you start typing “space. In addition to the text you type in your search, we use account information, hashtags, and locations, called signals, to rank search results.

The most important signals are:

Your text in Search.

By far the most significant signal for Search is the text you enter in the search bar. We try to find identities, profiles, captions, hashtags, and locations that match what you type.

Your activity.

This includes the accounts you follow, the posts you’ve seen, and how you’ve previously interacted with accounts. We prioritize accounts and hashtags that you follow or frequent over those that you don’t.

Information about the search results.

We also look at popularity signals when there are a lot of potential results. For a specific account, hashtag or location, these include the number of clicks, sympathies, actions, and followers.

How we help you show up in Search

We know how important it is for you to appear in search results when friends or followers are seeking you. We want to make it simple for others to locate your photos and videos, so here are a few recommended practices to help you appear in search results:

Use an appropriate handle and profile name.

The text matches the search results. The best way to appear in relevant searches on Instagram is to use an Instagram handle or profile name that is linked to the content of your posts. If you have a nickname or a nickname that your friends or followers know you by, include it in your username or profile so that you will appear when they search for you.

Include relevant keywords and locations in your bio.

Here’s the same idea. Make certain that your bio contains keywords that describe who you are and what your profile is about. Sharing your location in your bio can help people in your area locate you if your account is location-specific, such as for a small business. It can also help to increase Instagram followers on your account.

How we help keep Search safe

In search results, we don’t display your accounts, posts, or hashtags that violate our Recommendations Guidelines. This is accomplished in a variety of ways. Spam accounts and accounts that violate our criteria may display lower search results, and you may have to search for them using their entire username. We also use additional safety procedures to ensure that we don’t offer you potentially hazardous content while searching for sensitive topics. Accounts, hashtags, and posts that violate our Community Guidelines are permanently removed from Instagram, and their content is no longer searchable.

The search was originally created to help you navigate Instagram. We’ll be launching a series of enhancements aimed at providing inspiration and discovery in the near future. Instagram Search is now more than simply a tool for finding accounts and hashtags thanks to these updates. We’re working on a full search results page that will make it even easier to delve deeper into your passions.

The number of terms available for content search is growing. We’re focusing on getting keyword search results perfectly in English right now, but we’ll add support for additional languages later.
